In the Dragoon Mountains of Southeast Arizona, you'll find a magical place. Cochise Stronghold is remarkable for its stark beauty: towering granite domes, rugged cliff faces, and strange and impressive rock formations. But the area is also home to lush forest and a rich diversity of plant and animal life. To walk here is to see something striking and beautiful at every turn. In the Nineteenth century, these rugged mountains were the home and refuge of Cochise and 1000 of his Chiricahua Apache. It's easy to see why the Chiricahua people would choose this place as a refuge -- its rugged and inaccessible character made it a perfect retreat. And it's easy to see, too, why the Apache would fight so fiercely to stay on this land they loved so deeply. The beauty of this place -- in the light of early morning, or the golden light of sunset -- can be almost overwhelming.
